Abstract

Total laryngectomy has a profound impact of the patient's life. It is for this reason that adaptation to the loss of normal speech has been the focus of research on the rehabilitation of laryngectomees. Significant improvement of the prosthetic
voice
rehabilitation in laryngectomized patients has been accomplished in recent years.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the results of the voice rehabilitation using low-resistance, indwelling voice prosthesis(ProvoxTM) for the laryngectomees.
The data collected in 16 patients with ProvoxTM voice prosthesis. 10 patients(62.5%) are still using the ProvoxTM, the average device-life was 9.8 months. Good to fair vocal rehabilitation was achieved on 14 patients(87.5%). Insertion and
maintenance
were simple and complication was minor problem. The above results indicated that ProvoxTM was an effective tools in the voice rehabilitation of laryngectomees. (Korean J Otolaryngol 39 : 3, 1996)
